Serious attack on the International Criminal Court

The Arab Center for the Independence of the Judiciary and the Legal Profession (ACIJLP) and the Arab Coalition for the International Criminal Court (ACICC) strongly condemn the decision issued by the US Administration on 9 October to designate the International Criminal Court (ICC) as an institution subject to Executive Order 14203, entitled “Imposing Sanctions on the International Criminal Court”.

The decision constitutes a direct targeting of the IVC and represents the most serious US attack against the Court since 2002. It is a direct assault on judicial independence, the rule of law, and the international criminal justice system as a whole.

The repercussions of this decision extend beyond the institution itself, putting at risk the rights of millions of victims and survivors of the world’s most heinous crimes and threatening their protection and prospects of accessing justice.

The ACIJLP calls on States Parties to adopt a coordinated and collective response to this escalation, protect the independence of the Court’s work and activities, as well as the entities supporting it, and ensure that victims and survivors continue to have access to justice and reparations.

The Centre also calls on the governments of Arab States to stand with the ICC in the face of this unlawful US attack, which seeks to undermine the Court’s role in addressing war crimes and genocide committed in Gaza.
